About Solar Grid Tie
Solar electric panels, or photovoltaic (PV) panels, are mounted in an unshaded area for use in a home or business that is already supplied with utility electricity, such as Xcel Energy. Solar electric panels which are used in a system that already has utility power is called a ‘grid tie.’ These systems use no batteries but co-exist with the current utility grid. Grid tied solar panels produce kilowatts that are used directly in the home to power appliances, lights, air conditioners and so forth. Any excess power that is generated by the solar panels feeds back into the utility grid, spinning the meter backwards and accruing 'banked power' to be used by the home during those times when solar is not available, such as at night.
